Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is a clinical syndrome characterized by a dysregulated inflammatory response that can be caused by infectious or noninfectious processes. Sepsis is defined as SIRS caused by a confirmed or suspected infection. As sepsis progresses it can lead to severe sepsis, septic shock, and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Investigations should identify the source of infection and assess organ dysfunction, while priorities of treatment are stabilizing respiration and circulation followed by identifying and treating the underlying infection.
